The Psychology of Color
Color is powerful because it can change the mood of your consumers. For example, many people love blue. It is serene, and reminiscent of water and sky. A boat rental company might choose a blue logo, to remind its customers of a good day boating at the lake. Every time the customer sees their blue logo, it invokes a positive memory and they may continue to use the company's services. If appropriate marketing can positively change the state of mind of a customer, then this can deepen the bond with your brand.
Common Colors Used in Marketing
Since the beginning of marketing, color has been used among marketers to distinguish different products and services. Think of the ways colors are used when decorating for baby showers versus the colors of decorations you would buy for a 40th birthday party. Obviously, these colors could be very different. Here are some meanings of commonly used colors in marketing:
- Red is eye-catching. It is a warm color associated with love, energy, excitement, and intensity. Restaurants use red often because it raises the heart beat and can make people feel hungry.
- Orange is not as overpowering as red. Theme parks, toy companies, and entertainment products use orange because it suggests positive energy.
- Blue is calm and refreshing. People view it as pure and therefore mineral water, toothpaste, mouthwash, and deodorant is often times in blue packaging.
- Green gives a sense of harmony and balance. A lot of spas and health clubs use green to portray restoration and healthy living.
- Yellow is happy and friendly. Yellow is another warm color used frequently in children's products because it is bright and characterizes fun.
There is not a universal combination when choosing colors for your business, but certain colors will appeal to specific social groups, age groups, and genders. It is essential to know your audience and how they use your product. Pink would probably not sell motorcycles, just as black is probably not the first color choice to use for children's wear.
Color Sets the Tone for Your Business
Certain colors signify sports teams, business logos, and consumer products. If you have an established business, your community probably recognizes your logo and most likely the color(s) associated with it. When producing marketing materials for print to represent your business, make sure they stand out. The colors should be vibrant and not faded. Full color digital printing can produce quality looking materials. If your marketing looks careless, customers may think that is how you run your business.
